Power to outbuilding, yet another thread.

A very interesting thread Sunray, you do get involved in some situations don`t you? Good luck.
It`s enough to deal with electrical problems but dealing with human participants with varying conceptions of fair and unfair you have quite a complexity.
Add in a dash of legal complexities and you might have a novel to write, it could be made into a film!

Like I said, Good Luck! :giggle:

Interestingly several of my extended family members have written their life story and I have posted several clips of my life on some other sites so I must admit the temptation is there...

Did I ever mention the time I joined the fair and their 100Vdc wiring techniques?

Bare wires and cotton reels?

I'm confused

The workshop user is saying he has never had to pay for electricity and doesn't intend to
I was able to change his 60A fused switch for a garage CU quite easily and by 2pm he was back in business

So how does that mean that he still isn't paying, and the other flat owner no longer is?

It made sense at the time...
In the meter box are 3 meters and 2 switched fuses for 2 services, the 3rd CU is just through the wall.
I changed one switched fuse to a garage CU with 32A MCB for the workshop and 60A for the flat where the workshop user lives.so he now does pay for his workshop power, also covers the bin store light as it's such a low-cost

Seems like reality hit him and faced with a choice between paying for his electricity use, or not having an electricity supply he chose the latter.

Tomorrow I'm surveying/quoting for a solution. The problem as I understand it is some sort of communal building for some flats has power and light fed from one of the flats and that owner is complaining about the cost of supplying it.
I'm curious - if somebody finds a situation like that, or this: https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/additional-meter-installation-distribution-board.576411/

Are they doing anything wrong if they just disconnect the cable supplying the other building/flat/whatever? They are the one who is a victim of a crime, are they allowed to put a stop to it?

Interesting question. If it were a tenant who was the 'victim', I suppose they might be in breach of their Tenancy Agreement by 'interfering with the electrical installation'?

It's very tricky as the original arrangement may have been an arrangement between the parties involved at the time and subsequent parties may not have access to those agreements, in the case of this thread it was a magistrates order for the circuit to be disconnected. That order was posted in various places (not by me), I was given an official copy as a legal entitlement to disconnect the outbuildings service. I know of 2 situations where a second dwelling has been built for relatives and power is simply taken from the original metered supply, I know one of those simply shares the bill, the other Daddy pays. If/when those are sold it will/maybe the situation we are discussing above.
In my home there is a granny annex with a private meter although not a second dwelling as such as there is no bathroom.

It's not that rare a situation, I've encountered several over the years. Some have been straightforward theft: https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/freds-new-flat.192964/page-3#post-4789977 https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/...een-it-all-and-i-hate-domestics-still.572938/ while others are historic or accidental: https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/tv-trips-neighbours-rcd.552549/page-2#post-4729393
I had one where alterations had been made to a building, resulting in a room being repurposed to the neighbours, I discovered it after isolating the CU then chopping a live cable: https://www.diynot.com/diy/threads/...d-i-hate-domestics-still.572938/#post-4989300

In that case would they be bound by them?

How do rights and responsibilities get transferred to subsequent parties without their knowledge?

Covenants etc are in the deeds when property is bought/sold, but if it's just a standalone agreement between A & B, can that become an agreement between A & C without C knowing?

Although as JohnW2 says, if it's rented properties, interfering with the electrical installation might be a violation. But then if there's nothing in Cs tenancy agreement which says he has to pay A, or he has to supply A.....
