precautions. old boilers & asbestos rope?

HI guys,

can anyone tell me how they deal with the situation when removing old boilers with the asbestos rope seals? when taking out the A/C flues the rope seal has to be disturbed, some times breaking up as you well know. Reason for my query was because i was speaking to my mate last night who is a licenced asbestos remover, he said the rope seals are lethal?
