Hi,

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I'm new to this and want to make sure I'm doing it right!

I am replacing the skirting board in my lounge and the skirting I've bought says that it needs to be prepared prior to use. From what I've read, I understand that this means I have to apply a knotting solution to it, then once it's fixed apply a primer aswell before I paint it in satinwood. Is this right?

Many thanks in advance,

Mel

Sounds like you have the right idea. I'd normally fill after priming as it helps you to see any areas that need tidying up.

Thank you! Is there a recommended knotting solution? I don't really know what I'm looking for!

Any DIY store will have this stuff, just ask for 'knotting solution'. Its shellac / spirit based, in bottles in 500ml or 1l.
John :)

Ok thanks. And another, probably obvious, question-does it just go on the knots or am I best to brush it over the whole board?

Just brush it over the knots - it doesn't matter if it gets on the raw timber.
This stuff works surprisingly well - not all knots will show but any that have a tendency to bleed will be stopped by this solution.
You'll pay around £8 per 500ml approx.
John :)
