Does anyone know if there is a gadget that can be installed onto an inlet water mains to prevent grit and dirt entering the water system of a house?

The problem I have is every few months the cold water tank ballcock will not shut off properly as the washer cannot close the water inlet as it collects grit and dirt on the washer from water coming in from the mains. This is becoming a pain and I want to fix the problem for good. I have had the house for 7 years now and I'm fed up of going into the loft and cleaning the valve of the ballcock inlet.

If there is a device I can buy, do you know how much it is and how much it would roughly cost for a plumber to install it?

Thanks
G

Still going to have to clean the strainer out though !

I would have thought that contacting the water Company that you have problems with grit in the mains would be the first idea, sounds like someone up the line is flushing the mains through a washout/ hydrant valve, or the mains pipe is damaged
