Primer VS Undercoat

I've got some window exterior metal lintels to paint.

The old paint has flaked off so I'm presuming I need user a primer base before applying gloss finish.

The family were out at the weekend and picked up a tin of Wilco Undercoat for wood and metal.

Is this adequate for metal surface priming or should I get it exchanged for a can of metal primer that Wilco also have?

What sort of "Metal" are the Lintels made from?

In general terms, a primer is generally advised, for example if it is Galvanised the classic primer would be a so called "Etching Primer" it has the ability to grab and bond with the Galvanised metal.

Evening Ken, thanks for posting.

Its the underside of the window support lintel so yes, probably galvanized. House is 25 years old.

So an etching primer is best for the application?

I was thinking of this Wilco primer!
