Problem fitting a handrail

I am trying to fit a handrail with a recessed hook system on my landing. Once I lock in one end, the screw on the other end won’t clear the edge of the newell post to the centre of the post where the hook system is due to the protruding screw that needs to hook in - see photos.

Am I totally missing something here? The hand rail fits snug between the posts without the screws. Do I need to trim the handrail? I’d then be worried about having a gap.

My amateur view - You do not want to be cutting the handrail. You need to find a way to get the screw in, e.g. can you cover a large screwdriver in cloth, and then use that to lever open a gap between handrail and post so you can slide it in. (Not saying this is a good idea, but it's an idea).

Is there any slight give in the newel?

Only way I can see is by cutting a channel in the newel and filling afterwards. Wouldn't be pretty though. Very odd design really.

Other option is remove the screw and fix externally from the underside. Not sure it'd be robust though.
