We have a Profile 40e boiler, which for the last 4 years (since I lived here) has been pretty good. Had the occassional trip, but otherwise no issues. Recently it took to cutting out with this becoming more regular - the saftey switch tripping. We have recently had a guy in to look at it and the system to try and sort, as it was tripping every time it ran.

The guy said that the boiler is working fine, the pump is not sticking (for HW/CH) and the thermostat is ok as well.

Prior to it being looked at the pilot would take a bit of time to light, but now when it comes on it generally lights first/second time.

We were told that the only thing that seemed likely to be causing the boiler to trip is that it was overheating. As we did not have a bypass fitted, we had this added, and for the first few days the boiler seemed fine, but it has started to trip again to the point we were back to square one and it was tripping everytime it runs.

However, this time, by chance we have found if we set the CH thermostat at 25C the boiler is happy as larry, but we don't want the heating that high. Generally we have it sat at about 20/21C and as soon as we turn it down to this, the boiler complains. The number dial on boiler is currently sat at 3 (I know that this effects how hard the boiler is working), the CH/HW pump is at 2 (has three speeds) and the bypass dial that was fitted has a dial which currently sits at 2.

Does anyone have any thoughts suggestions, that we can check for, before we caller the boiler man back in, ie would changing the speed of the bypass dial help?

Have been checking for air in system and this hasn't been noticeable....any comments are appreciated

for frequent failure and resetting of the overheat thermostat would suggest maybe a faulty main control thermostat or defective overheat thermostat both of these can be checked easily by your rgi.
what is the water quality like in the central heating system? it could be partially sludged up.
also checks need to be made regarding gas burner pressures and including gas rates

Get your rgi to check the pump overrun stat (if fully pumped) and even if its wired correctly. Quite common for the pump live not to be run from these boilers (when fully pumped)

As an after thought, do you have a Honeywell zone/mid position valve?
(usually silver box in airing cupbourd). These can cause overheat.

I have found loads of Pump OR stats on these that have come off thepipe due to a rusty retaining clip

worth checking
