I'm replacing my old programmer Gloworm with a new one (Drayton) and the wiring is to be different (different terminals used on the backplate). Is it possible to just re-arrange the wires for the new programmer on the backplate or will I need to unscrew the old backplate and fit the new one and then re-wire?

Depends if the old back plate is compatible with the new programmer. I'd fit the new back plate. Should fit onto the existing back box.
