Boris has asked pubs to close to stop the spread of the virus. I was in a pub last night when this news broke. I stayed to help them get rid of the beer; there was a Dunkirk spirit about it.

Rumour had it that the police were going round the pubs asking them to close.

Is it compulsory? What would happen to a pub that defied it and stayed open? Allowing the pubs to stay open until the lines run dry would be reasonable; a lot of good beer will have to be poured down the drains otherwise.

Pubs are one of my favourite things, so I can definitely say that this virus outbreak is affecting me. Thanks China.

I visited a few supermarkets today and there was noticeably less beer, wine and spirits on the shelves. Some panic buying of alcoholic drink is occurring due to the closing of the pubs it seems.

Pubs have suffered death by a thousand cuts over the last few decades. Supermarkets have been the main factor in the decline of pubs. At one time, you could not buy alcohol anywhere but a pub (an on-licence - you have to drink on the premises). This changed in the 1960s, when shops were granted off-licences to sell booze. Supermarkets grew and grew unfettered, welcomed by local authorities whilst pubs faced all manner of taxes, restrictions, rules and regulations. I would posit that off-licences have created more problem drinkers than pubs ever did, or ever will.

Long live the British public house.

    I'll drink to that.

Seems like you were born 100 years too late boyo. Either that or you are scared witless about moving on.

Good to see you’re not practicing social distancing. That’s not what I would call a Dunkirk spirit. I’d call that practicing a Lemming mentality. Keep it up, we need less like you.

None of this is mandatory, yet. However, pubs may be breaking the law if they allow takeouts.

One of the ladies who works for me was down the pub earlier in the week. She has an immunity disorder caused by thyroid damage and is a single mum. Some people just can't be told.

Just seeing those crowds on the Florida beaches and you can’t help thinking what ****ing, ****ing idiots they are. Some of those will be directly responsible for the death of others all because they wanted some time on the beach. They should be machine gunned on the spot.

    edit: Florida beaches, not Bondi.

I lived on Bondi for a time. That was as packed as Christmas day 92. Madness. Not all Aussies the beach will have a heavy number of back packers from around the world.
