My 2004 Punto gearbox is playing up. It is difficult to get it into second gear. Anyone herad of similar faults, what has gone, and how much to repair?

Difficulty engaging gears could be down to a clutch problem, how many miles has the car done?

43000. Tonight I am unable to select 2nd or 4th. No problem with 1st and 3rd. Don't know about reverse yet, will know better when I have to back of the drive tomorrow.

Does the fact that there is no problem with some of the gears suggest that the clutch is OK?

If you can engage the gears with the engine off, it would suggest a clutch problem....however if this isn't the case it could be a linkage problem (2nd and 4th are in the same plane) or the selector forks coming loose within the gearbox.

I'd go for a linkage problem if it's the 'back' gears.
Possibly a worn gearbox mount resulting in the gearbox moving

I am unable to engage any of the bottom side gears, 2nd, 4th and reverse. The remainder seem fine.

Get someone to check the linkages for you mate - I think these are a cable shift?
They do need to be set up correctly to prevent other nasties to the gearbox.
John :)

Turned out to be one of the cables from the gear lever to the gear box. It seems that one does the bottom side gears, the other the top set. £115 at the local garage.
