Putting down gravel but hardcore chunks are quite large.

Hi, We've put down some hardcore (broken up slabs) on to a path and wacked it down with an aim to gravel over this but I'm told the chunks of hardcore are quite large (fist sized) and would kick up over time and come up through the gravel.

Do you think it would be worth placing a wire mesh over the hardcore and securing down before the gravel to stop the hardcore from kicking up?

Any thoughts appreciated.
