Putting up a fence between a brick wall.

I have just had a wall built at the end of my back garden. There is a pillar at either end of the wall and 1 in the middle.
I am wanting to fence inbetween the pilllars now my question is am I allowed to see the good side of the fence or do i have to look at the ugly side ie the fence rails and supports.
I know i could play it safe and board both sides of the fence rails but that is more money
So does anyone know the rules on this?
