hi everyone,
a single radiator in the bedroom has been making this intermittent tapping sort of noise. it makes a single tap noise and will stop and then it will happen again intermittenly (might be every 5-10min). this carries on as long as heating is on so all day.
To be clear, am not referring to the usual tick tick tick noise when the heating comes on and you have the metal expanding with a ticking noise.
this one is from only the bedroom rad. its also intermittent and might do it every 5 or 10 min when heating is on. the rad has a TRV on it.

anyone has any idea what might be causing this? could this be the valve on either side of rad causing this noise? noise is certainly from the rad itself. noise is somewhat like tapping the rad with a metal object. No noises from the valves themselves.

any advice welcome and thank you

Put something under rad like books to take weight off brackets to prove its not that.

Then look at copper pipes around road that maybe rubbing

If you have TRVs on other rads you could try swapping with one of them. If the noise goes with valve that's the culprit

Does just making a small adjustment to the TRV, immediately stop the noise for a while, then the noise comes back?

i havent tried that so will try later today and update. what i have done is replace the TRV head with another one from a nearby rad. made no difference to issue though. thank you Harry

What I have in mind, is that some TRV's, if the valve is fitted to the wrong end of the radiator, can start to chatter quite loudly when the at the switch off temperature. Simply turning them up, or down from that temperature, stops the noise instantly, but only for a while, then the noise returns.

Nudge the radiator a smidge to the left or right. It might just be rubbing on the brackets as it’s expanding/contracting.

thank you . i have just done that so will see when i get back home this evening if its any better. many thanks

if all fails, i think i will just change the valve with TRV head and hopefully that resolves it. i cant see anything else that would cause the noise but am not an expert LOL . thank you all
