When you get home, go into the loft and as Kev said, check the small tank has water in it and the ballcock works correctly.

How did you check the pump? Did you just feel or listen for it? This can be a false errand.... are you hearing any banging noises? Is the thermostat on the boiler turned right up?

A guy came to look at the pump and said it is working and is the right one for the system and thought it needed a new valve and quoted me £300.

The thermostat on the boiler is upto max

But that's still £130 per hour labour charge. As for just one hours work, changing a midposition valve normaly involves draining down and refilling? That could take another hour.

How do you do that with a 3-port valve? You can only have one break in the system and removing a 3-port gives two breaks.

Bunged and changed 3 ports hundreds of times with no problem
