hi.. we have just moved into a house with a lovely rayburn 355m solid fuel stove which heats the rads and water. we are due to have a condeser boiler put in soon for convieniance and would like to use the rayburn just as a cooker. have read about putting sand in the boiler once it is disconnected??? also to definatley not cap off the old pipe outlets...apparently agas are not allowed to run if they have a back boiler and have been disconnected from heating and water. is it the same for rayburns??

A 'dry' boiler, or one filled with sand would probably run a lot hotter than the manufacturers intended, so thermal expansion of the metal may become a problem.

The only safe way of doing it is to remove the boiler & build up with fire bricks.
Specialist job really as the top needs to come off to get the boiler out. You could always contact an AGA/Rayburn agent/installer.
Can be done & it's well worth doing.

If the Rayburn is a twin burner model [one for the boiler, one for cooking] you can probably use the cooker burner only and disable the boiler burner.

What type of "condensor boiler" are you having fitted?
Are you keeping the hot water cylinder and re connecting new boiler to this and disconnecting the solid fuel?
Might I suggest another arrangement!
How about re arranging the fire bricks for summer use thus lowering the output and upgrade to a new twin coil cylinder with the coils nested.
The second coil then connects to the new boiler.
Have you had a plumber involved yet and what has he suggested?
its an alpha cd28x we are having fitted with premier pack and we get 6yrs parts and labour warrenty. my plumber is just disconnecting the rayburn 355m as he is not a specialist. the hot water tank in airing cupboard will be removed and the header tanks in loft to. we have 3 kids, one of whom is disabled so cleaning out ashpans and grates 2- x a day, loading up coal scuttles and making sure its running as efficently as poss is a hard job lol. i love it to bits but its does cost more than gas will. i would love to keep it hooked up to everything along with the boiler so its always there as back up. but i dont know how much this would cost and if we can afford it. at the moment the kids come first and having a boiler in is best for the family. but the rayburn will never go!!

A specialist would remove the top & the existing boiler. Fill the void the boiler has left with fire brick.
Very good call regarding a thermal store or heat bank to replace your existing cylinder, that would mean retaining your existing Rayburn as it is.
But pointless doing this if you don't intend to make full use of the Rayburn.
