I have just had a kitchen design company design my kitchen - however, before they can install, I have been told that under the new guidelines, my electrics now have to be RCD protected !

My current consumer unit is a Wylex unit with wired fuses (Sockets-All, Lights-Up, Lights-down, Garage & cooker).

What is required ? Am I right to assume that I will need the consumer unit replaced ?

I have contacted my electrical supplier - British Gas, but still awaiting a follow-up phone call.

Is there any other alternatives.

Thanks to all

Any circuit they alter/add-to will have to be RCD protected.
They could add another CU and add any extra to that which would be RCD protected, thus leaving existing circuits alone.
However, your existing CU with wired-in fuses is probably in need of replacement anyway and now would be a good idea to upgrade to a new one.

Thanks for the advice.

Thats what the kitchen fitter's suggested - replace the whole CU rather than have one fitted (by themselves) just to protect the kitchen.

Assume cost will be around £300 for replacement of CU (NE34 area).

The price is entirely dependant on what is involved.

I would expect £300 to cover only a straight forward mains change. Things like installing / upgrading main protective bonding may be required, which will add to the cost.
