Re-viving Parquet Flooring

I've just ripped up the carpet in my bedroom and have discovered that I have Parquet Flooring. I want to sand it down and polish it up, what would be the best way to:

- Sand the whole floor down ( I was thinking about hiring an idustrial sander but my mate said that this would ruin the floor??)
- Polishing and varnishing the floor, what is the best method?

Any ideas would be great, thanks..
