Hi, like most people i have recently fitted a new modern light fitting, replace my old and worn out white fixture...

however modern lights dont seem to come with a celling rose to enable you to connect up spurs and things...

i therefore use terminal connectors and insulation tape to connect my modern lights and maintain all the exisiting circuits and things...good news all the lights and all the switches work, but i am worried that i have cut a corner and done something i shouldn't....

does that make sense

oh no it isn't, terminal block should be in an enclosure - not wrapped in insulation tape which also makes a gungy horrible mess of it.

Maybe you're just not reading it the same way as me. My impression was that the OP has installed new fittings and simply used terminal blocks inside the fitting to replace the connections formerly in the ceiling rose. If that is indeed the case then this is perfectly fine, and a wrap or two of tape around the terminal block wont do any harm either.

If the connections are exposed above the ceiling then I also agree that this is wrong, but even use of choc boxes wouldn't be an ideal solution for the downstairs lighting as they would mean concealed screw terminals under the upstairs floor.

If it is in the fitting there is still no need to use insulation tape. It just makes a horrible sticky mess of the wires.
