We had a bedroom converted into a bathroom about 5 months ago, professionally done by a local firm. The sealant around the bath is already going mouldy, but only in the wettest part where the shower frequently wets it. The mould is beneath/inside the sealant, so we can't just clean it off. The shower is used daily by a family of four, and the bathtub is is often wet as a result, although there is an in-line extractor fan directly above the shower that does a pretty good job of clearing steam.
My question is, is it reasonable to expect sealant to last a bit longer than 5 months before it starts going mouldy? Or is it an inevitable result of the bathtub frequently being damp? I am led to believe the mould beneath the sealant is a sign that water is getting trapped behind it, so it may not have correctly sealed in the first place?
