Hi guys

Currently getting my ensuite re-done and would like to add some recessed lighting, such as

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/39413...wnlights/Shower-Light-IP65-MR16-Satin-Nickel#

The light switch is located outside the ensuite in the bedroom and is currently a conventional 1 gang rocker switch. We would like to replace this with a dimmer switch - can a dimmer switch be used on such lights? I have been looking on the screwfix website and all their bathroom lights seem to be low voltage. Are all recessed lights now low voltage with a separate transformer?

Thanks in advance.

The lights you have quoted use 12V lamps and a transformer to change the voltage from 230v to 12v. The dimmer goes on the 230v side so a dimmer can be used on these lights.
You can also get similar lamps that use mains voltage lamps (eg GU10) so a transformer is not required.

Please note:
1. You may need to derate the dimmer when its being used with some types of lamps
2. Most electrical work in a bathroom (including adding downlights) is notifiable. See WIKI for details.

Thanks. Which are the best type, low voltage or 230v?
Any significant pro's or cons of either type?

However..................

If your en-suite has an extractor fan which comes on at the same time as the lights then you will not be able to use a dimmer!!

12v lamps give a crisper white light and the lamps last a bit longer

230v lamps give a more 'orangy' glow

Contrary to some people's belief 12v ones cost about the same to run as 230v ones

Extractor fan has a pull cord to start it so would be ok on that one.
