If you mean the sensors that are linked back to the valve with a capillary tube then they're so the sensor can be located on the wall at a convenient height if the valve itself is inaccessible or covered by curtains, etc. Rare beasts - I don't think I've ever seen one.

Seen them fitted when rad has direct sunlight on it from southern facing patio doors,, heat from sun was keeping trv off so remote sensor trv fitted with sensor out of direct sunlight

oki remote trvs are used in 2 instances with the aformentioned quinn lst covers. Secondly on the outside of domestic radiator covers as those silly things just heat up and the trvs shutdown if they inside.
