Removal of self drive gearbox / shafts.

On my mower the self drive has been disconnected & also no belt to pulley on bottom of crank.

Recently I’m getting vibration when cutting grass. Looking under the mover I can see it’s the self propel gearbox. Grabbing it by hand I can rotate it as I like due to no belt being fitted & drive gears in wheels removed. So basically it’s redundant.

Is there any reason why I can’t just cut the shafts that come out of the gearbox either side & bin it.

I’ve looked at the height adjuster system & how it’s connected to the rear axle etc & all seems ok with removal.

What are your thoughts.
My mower has 1 lever rear right hand side that when moved to a new height the bar between rear & front wheel makes the adjustment height of the deck go up or down.

I would then need to strip it out, my original post was just to see if any others had taken them out before who would advise say No you cant then a reason.

I will pop it out & show photo

Gearbox is shot hence why i now push it & isnt an issue.

Inside the wheels should be a gear which locks into the wheel so when self drive is active these gears drive the mover forward.
These have been removed so there is just a shaft sticking out but vibration etc allows the shaft to move slightly and touch & the inside part & then i hear it knocking the inside of the wheel, last week wheel locked up on one side.

So as the gearbox is shot & not doing anything this is why i asked about cutting the shafts & removing it all.
Basically my goal would just have the rear wheels rotate & the height adjustment lever would still operate.

I was thinking of cutting the shaft where the Red arrows are shown.
Once removed then remove the small piece of shaft left inside the wheel.
So with no shaft / gearbox im looking now at where this mounts.
There are 4 screws each side which pass through a small clamp.
This small clamp then clamps down on the large diameter piece of plastic which seems to be part parcel of the whole wheel backplate etc.
This is shown by the Blue Arrows.
So my thoughts are as the drive shaft just passes through / rotates inside this large piece of plastic then there should be no reason why i cant cut the shaft out.

Does that sound right & look right going by photos supplied.

Odd post but im an odd person.
