Hi All,

I posted a similar question before, but didn’t get any replies. Looking back I think I was asking for too much advice at once and so thought I would break it down into something more straight forward.

I am attempting to renovate a master bedroom which is part of a 2 storey extension (with a flat roof). The room has a blocked off section in one corner, which I wanted to remove to open the room up so it is a uniform shape. I proceeded to remove one wall (that was not supporting any joists above) and discovered the remaining wall was supporting a number of the ceiling joists in that section of the room. What seems odd is that the joists look like they were too short for the room, and the wall has been used to support them, and another shorter joist used to fill the remaining space.

I want to remove the wall, but am unsure as to what needs to be done to support the joists. Would the existing joists in that section of the room need to be replaced with full length ones, or is there someway of joining the ones that are already there. I just wanted a general idea of what work needs to be done so I can go ahead and start getting some quotes for the work.

Thanks

You need to insert a " trimmer " to support the joists- search or google for the concept
