Hi

I’m trying to remove a sink plug that has no locking nuts, it looks like it’s just been siliconed in and I can’t budge it, should the bottom section unscrew from the top section? Is there a knack for doing that? I’ve attached some photos the space is really minimal getting grips in is nearly impossible.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks

The whole body of the waste (in your 2nd photo) acts as a nut and turns anticlockwise (when you're looking at it from underneath) this captures the "tailpipe" of the plughole bit... You will need to remove as much silicone as you can and possibly wedge a screwdriver in from the top to hold the plughole steady whilst you unscrew the body from below.

In your second picture you need to unscrew the metal connection from the waste, usually a pair of grips will suffice, try not to bugger up the threads, if there's no room then Disconnect the taps and plastic waste and take the sink off the wall.

Thanks for the replies, if I can’t get much of the silicon out can I hammer it until it undoes?

I can’t remove the sink as it’s tiled above and siliconed in as well, it’s a new build and they’ve heavy siliconed over the bolts they hold the sink to the wall.

Do you need to remove it?
What's the purpose?
If it's to change to a different type of waste then you'll have to persevere trying to get the basin off if there's no clearance to undo it.
Unfortunately, most work on new builds rarely caters for the "next guy"!

Yeah replacing for a new waste and tap that match guess I’ll keep going I’ve got some silicon removing paste which I’m trying now.

I’ve managed to turn it about a quarter way by hammering on the bit that is jutting out.
Thanks for the help! The rotation to unscrew it was a big help

You will need to hold the waste from inside the basin, usually a big screwdriver pushed into the slot inside the throat allows it to be held enough

Thanks for all the help managed to get it all out after a few hours of trying, I ended up coating the entire seal with silicon remover scraping out as much as I could when it had removed it.

Then used a pair of grips on the plug side to move it back and forth. this the started it moving but the bottom section rotated. So then I wedged a soft handle screw driver through the base section where the plug mechanism would go through against the peddle stool and used the grips to keep turning it.

Thanks for all your help!
