Throughout the ground floor of our new house we have ceramic tiles on a floating chipboard floor that we want to replace, as many are cracked and worn. The tiles come up easily enough but the adhesive and grout are proving very difficult to shift. We've tried tool hire centres but they didn't have a machine for the job, so all we can do is scrape, which is time consuming and exhausting! We have had suggestions of a screed over the top, but I'm worried that will crack too. Or ply over the top. Any ideas please? Thank you!

There are machines at specialist flooring supplies that can be rented to grind the residue down.
You can also hire large, heavy, long handled, steel bladed scrapers from HSS for instance.
Depending on how good your DIY tiling skills are, you could apply a thick layer of powdered adhesive to the floor, and butter the back of the tile.
This will bring you above the residue, but it requires a little skill to level the tile and the tile field.
Note that the FFL will now be higher.
You could practice on a small area.
A final resort, is to replace the chipboard, but that's expensive and might not be necessary.

Thank u dann09. Please can u tell me where I could hire a grinding machine and whether it would b ok on the chipboard. Also what do u think to a screed over the top of the tiles? Could the cracked ones cause problems with the new vinyl and carpet we want to lay? Thanx again.

No. Never lay vinyl or carpet over tiles.
You could use a self levelling compound over the grout and adhesive residue, but beware that it will probably raise the FFL of the carpet or vinyl.
