Renault master - no power when cold

I've just bought an 07 Renault Master, 2.5 diesel, 97K on clock.

The van needs about 5 goes before it starts properly, it starts, engine shudders and stops, when it eventually starts it runs smoothly but has no power for about the first mile - almost as if in limp mode, then power comes in and it runs fine all day. Starting from not quite cold is fine, but again no power for a brief spell.

Had it in garage and they spent 2 days on it, but couldn't find a solution, they checked intake, injectors, heater plugs etc.

Any ideas would be appreciated - don't want to take it to Renault who will prob keep changing expensive parts.

Thanks,
Iain.

just bought a 56 plate renault master 2.5 120dci. im having the exact same problem you describe , the first 2 weeks the van ran perfectly, then failed to start properly first time and as you say has no power at all until it warms up usually about a mile or so as you describe.
was wondering/ hoping you found a solution to your trouble.

john.

Hi John,

Yes - I got it fixed. I took it to a diesel injection specialist. They couldn't find anything untoward with the pump / injectors etc. They took it to a Renault commercial vehicle dealer - Scot truck, I think, and they reprogrammed / recoded the ECU and it cured the problem.

The van is now on 115k and starts and runs really well - did cost me £600+ but it did need a specialist. The garage did say it was best to take it to a commercial dealer.

Good Luck Mate.

hello again. would you know if your engine has an egr valve or not? i was passing the local ambulance fleet maintenence depot the other day , i noticed they were running a fleet of masters so i popped in to pick the mechanics brains. he was really helpful , took a look at my van and said he woukld be 99% sure the problem will be caused by a gunked up or seized egr valve.

He said that any other problems would bring on an engine management or warning light , but this problem doesnt show up any lights or on diagnostic equipment .

also was the £600 the total cost of all the investigation and repair or was that just what renault charged you ?

thanks again in advance

Hi there,

My local garage checked it for a day and couldn't find fault - they checked all the usual egr, intakes, checked codes, couldn't solve it. As I use them a lot, they didn't charge for any of this.

The £640 + Vat was charged by the diesel injection garage, it was them who took it to Renault.

Hope you've got it fixed - I've got 5 masters and this has been the only engine problem - don't mention gearboxes though

hello again.
bad running problem seems to be solved now.
apparently by slightly turning the egr valve you can blank off the inlet port for the egr, rendering the egr system defunct , slight re-programming of the ecu cost 35 quid and it runs great now.

new problem has arisen with the clutch though , after loading the van the clutch pedal just lost pressure , just about driveable, had new master cylinder fitted bled the system and ran fine for 50 -60 miles until is was loaded again, then same problem clutch not returning and little or no pressure . just wondering if you have had any clutch problems with any of your masters ..

Hi Glad your engine is running well.

Clutches - oh yes! Just been posting on clutch problem.

We've got one that very ocasionally clutch stays near floor, done it for nearly 2 years, flick up pedal and all will be good again - maybe happens once a week.

Just did a master cylinder on another, easy repair.

Another couple have had slave cylinder go - you'll know when this happens as the pedal will most likely stay on floor and you'll lose all the fluid - you'll see it run out of bottom of bell-housing. This, unfortunately, means gearbox out as Renault, among others, have conveniently put this cheap part which will deteriorate in time inside the bell-housing - £700 job to replace £70 part, garage should replace your clutch at same time.

Might be worth bleeding clutch agai. Be lucky!

Hi mate I've got a 2007 master which is a bit sluggish and I'd like to try your fix first. However no idea where the valve is and how easy is it to do? Can you elaborate please?
