Hello,

I would like to fix a simple table lamp that that has been giving off a burning smell very soon after it is turned on. Different bulbs and even those rated well under the stated 60W limit of the lamp produced that same smell.

I've completely removed the bayonet fitting and the power cable, which seems to have been badly twisted somehow. I'm hoping that's the simple culprit for the fault that a new cable and holder will fix.

I suspect I'm overthinking it, but I've confused myself to a standstill in trying to find a compatible replacement for the lampholder. I keep seeing "for ceiling fitting only" on what look like ideal candidates. I realise those that include switches will be for table lamps, but I'd rather fit a rocker switch instead.

Would a kind soul confirm or rule out these as acceptable candidates? Apologies if I haven't provided enough information as yet...

Thanks in advance!

For a table or standard lamp either something like Shockguard Plus which has a specially designed shutter that automatically shields the lamp contacts, therefore eliminating the danger of electrocution, or a holder would hole is too small to put fingers in, would likely be required by our stringent health and safety in a nanny state.

However if you consider there is no chance of children playing with it, then the only thing your looking for is a screw thread a typical kit looks like this

note c) d) or e) which is the thread to which the holder screws on to, in the past I have bought two cheap lamp holders and swapped parts to be able to remove the switch.

None of those are suitable, they are for ceiling use with the flex supporting the weight of it.
For a table lamp it needs to have a threaded hole rather than a flex grip.
Most are 1/2 inch thread, although other sizes do exist.

Installed incorrectly - someone probably connected the wiring then attached it to the threaded tube while it was already in the lamp base.
The correct way is to connect the wiring, screw the lampholder onto the threaded tube, and then install the tube into the lamp base, so the flex isn't twisted.

You might also consider an ES lampholder.

Thanks, Detlef, that's an excellent site with proper descriptions for the likes of me. And yes, I've a few ES bulbs around that could be put to better use than lying in a box. If the mum approves (it's her lamp)...

With young grandchildren around, my mum is definitely watchful about such things, so I'll certainly look into the Shockguard holder - thanks Eric.

The holder was trying to unscrew itself with the wries so twisted. I'll know not to make the same mistake (she says with misplaced confidence!)

Thanks all, I'll post an update when it all comes together in the most beautiful lamp ever!
