I have replaced a 2 gang dimmer switch for 2 sets of lights with a new switch, but the internals for the new switch are different. I have wired it up and both sets of lights work and dim OK, but after a while the switch heats up and one set of lights cuts out. After a while it cools and the lights come on again. I have connected Yellow to L1 on the first gang, and Blue to L1 on the second gang, Red to C on the second gang, and connected C on both gangs together with a short piece of cable from a 3 core standard flex . Where have I gone wrong? Any assistance appreciated.

the flex part is wrong, but that is not your problem.

your dimmer switch is underrated

Thanks for the help. Does underrated mean that the electrical load is too much for it, in which case what should I look for in a new switch?
Also, if I need to cross connect the 2 gangs together on a new switch what sort of cable should I use, or is there a better way of doing it?

re the flex.

its probably not 1mm (too small) so use a piece of twin and earth that same as your switches do.

re switch:

yes the load is too big for the switch, you need a suitably rated switch, but that depends on :
lamp load
type of lamps

Thanks, I'll check what I need and get a switch that will take the higher load.
