Got some pretty naff banisters. I had an idea of keeping the newel post and handrail and putting something like chrome poles in instead.

Question is will that hold everything well enough and maintain it's integrity if its glued top and bottom.

You would have to replace the infill section top and bottom with new drilled to dimensions of metal poles , you will need more than existing to maintain the correct spacing. (Less than 100mm gap).

I know what you mean (to manoeuvre the poles in). Thanks

The infills in your handrail and baserail will either be 32mm or 41mm wide x 8 to 12mm thick.

You will need timber that replicates the dimension of the infil strips but in one piece for each the length of the handrail and the baserail.

I would predrill the infill strip for the centres of the metal poles 1mm bigger than the poles themselves, I.e 12mm pole -13mm hole. Instal the handrail strip first and with same drill bit drill upwards through the holes and into the handrail "about 20mm"

Fit the poles and push them upwards into the handrail, dry fit baserail strip and pull one pole down to engage in the predrilled hole, check for plumb. Glue bottom strip in, pull all poles down.

I would secure the poles with clear silicone, but only after painting.

Thanks for that. A few good points.
