Also suggested that the fuse was there to protect the appliance - which it isn't.

Fuses in plugs can sometimes protect the appliance, but your right they are primarily designed to protect the cable feeding the appliance.

Thank you all so much for your advice and comments, especially the Hot Dog one! The vacuum cleaner is now up and running having been fitted with new plug; I needed to strip back the plastic covering on the flex to allow enough exposure of the separate wires. Have even fitted the correct fuse! Thanks again everyone...
