Replacing nozzle on oiled fired boiler

Hello All
I have worked on my boiler as & when I have the know how to sort certain problems in the past, about a month back the boiler developed a smell of what I called unbernt oil which got stronger over a week.
I decided to have a closer look at the burner, after removing the burner I found a build up of black deposit just above the nozzle on a small serated circular plate, I carefully removed the excess build up with a brush and hoovered it up.
The nozzle looked quite black at this stage, I carefully cleaened it, assembled the unit and re-fitted the burner.
Fired it all up the strong smell had gone until now it has started to return, just wondered if fitting a new nozzle would get rid of this problem, I had the boiler serviced about 6 months back where a new nozzle was fitted as I was informed that they need replacement at a service time.
I am unsure if I fit a new nozzle if I need then to adjust the air/oil mixture intake or can I just replace the nozzle and leave it at that.

Any info gratefully accepted.

Thanks.[/b]

Hi,

If you replace the nozzle you should have it run up using a flue gas analyser and adjust air/fuel where necessery. Sound's like it may not be running right as it is so would suggest you get hold of an OFTEC engineer to have it looked at.

Could be a couple of things. Although the nozzle has been changed, the filters could be blocked on the oil line, the pump could be on it's way, the combustion settings could be incorrectly set, etc.
As the previous post said, call someone in to have a more informed look at it :)

The oriface in the nozzle is likely to be worn so cleaning it will have little effect. If it's worn then the oil delivered may be a little in excess and cause a rich mixture, causes soot.
So try a new one before anything else.
I wouldn't fancy paying a OFTEC engineer to adjust my air flow.

I wouldn't fancy adjusting your airflow. I don't bind working on boilers though.
