Hello all. One tile in our bathroom has cracked right across the middle, and I would like to replace just that one rather than redoing the whole wall. The tiles around it look sound, and I am keen not to chip or loosen them in the process.

What is the safest way to get the cracked tile out? I have seen advice about drilling a few holes and chiselling from the centre outwards, and about removing the grout around it first, but I am unsure which order works best in practice. I also want to make sure the replacement sits level with its neighbours.

If anyone has done this successfully, I would welcome a step-by-step approach and any mistakes to avoid. Thanks very much.

It's essential to remove all of the grout around the broken tile.......this reduces any shock from transmitting to the surrounding tiles.
A Stanley knife or equivalent is usually fine for this. Persevere until all of the grout has gone!
I have successfully on numerous occasions encouraged the tile to break further by tapping around the crack with a hammer, but minimal hammer drilling could help.
Avoid levering the fractured tile if the lever is near any of the good tiles!
John :)
