Hi, we have a wooden surface in our kitchen and the area around our sink (Belfast sink) has rotten badly so we are planning on cutting off the rotten part and replacing it with some similar looking wood we acquired. In order to prevent this happening again we would like to seal and varnish the wood then Tile on top of it.

Haven't done anything like this before so looking for advice, how would you ensure the tiles fit on top of the wood for example? Thanks

If you intend to tile then there is no need to varnish. You could use large floor tiles to minimise gaps .I used 600mm square as a temp bodge on my worktops.

Thanks for the reply - what about the exposed wood around the edges? We would want to protect this from any water.

If you want to go a bit OTT then treat the exposed edges with Bonda wood hardener - it in effect turns ths wood into plastic. Used for renovation work, etc where as much original timber as possible must be retained

You can add a trim to the front edge, I sliced down tile strips to use on mine.
