Repointing window bay

I'm repointing my bay window - 1920s semi. The bay bricks aren't bonded in to the main wall - same for all the houses in the road. Question: Is there a good way to point the joint where the two walls meet? The shape of the bricks means that the joint 'opens up' on the inside, so it's not like a regular joint with parallel sides. If you push mortar in to it, it just falls in to the cavity. Thanks for any advice...
