Ring final spurred off from a JB to each socket

The older connecting and wiring drops weren't as convenient as they are now so the JBs were a necessary part of the work

I think what happened is their use contined after it was no longer necessary

well at least it's done with JB's and not chocbloc, My daughter purchased a house where the lighting circuit where a piece was screwed to a joist at every light position and the 2 core flex for the pendant drop was knotted to stop it pulling through the PB Annoyingly each simply passed through a rose so it appeared to look correct.
And they were well painted in so not a selling action.

Wasn`t there some rule with a Ring Final that no more spurs than points on the ring? for some reason, my guess was more of a case of considered good housekeeping as you could spur one twin or single from any point on the ring and/or from any junction box on the ring plus one such from the fuseway origin of that ring (but just of safe to fit a maximum number you could correctly terminate a spur with a single point on it - of course if you then removed the ring itself all of the radial "spurs" would suddenly become dangerous (some folk would have you believe - although now becomes non-compliant by the fact it is treated as a normal radial with an oversized opd! LOL).

Trouble with rules/laws there are always some who would twist definitions to their advantage as well as some that understood the concepts and decide where the rules need not really apply. Human nature never ceases to amaze!

I sure it was not to you and yours but to us mere bystanders it could be thus viewed my friend. I have a few times where a situation might anger or upset me but give great amusement to others at the same time, I do try not to bcome one of those folks but I will admit not always easy.

Thinking back I remember a pub /restaurant where there was a massive junction box situation in the socket wiring

It was like Heathrow Airport on steroids

The owner used to direct me to it when an alteration needed doing

LOL - yes I can imagine (and yes there might be a few places where it could be OK but plenty not OK. LOL.
