hey i was woundering if any one could help me here. i am wanting to put in some more sockets in a bedroom i no how to wire ring mains etc. but what confused me is that theres three cables going to the back of the only socket in that bedroom. and there shouldn't be any spurs coming off of that socket ? can any one help me and tell me were the three cables should go i no two of them are defiantly the ring main but i don't no what the third one is.
sorry for babbling on. :D

That will be RING FINAL you'll be talking about !!!

If you have 3 cables (6 wires) then you possibly do have a ring final and a spur of some form.

Are all the cables the same CSA?

You really do need to know what the third cable is supplying (if anything)

To extend the ring main you simply leave one end of the ring in this socket and then draw in new cable to each new socket.

The other end goes to your last new socket.

However it is not as simple as all that, you need to understand that there are restrictions dependent on floor area served by the ring, voltage drop etc (these may not have any effect in a domestic dwelling as such)

Also is your present cable red/black if it is there are regulations requiring labelling at the consumer unit when you begin to mix the old colours with the new harmonised colours.

Then how are you going to know that the new (and old) cables have integrity, you will need to test the resistance of the insulation. Continuity, Earth fault loop impedance and on the list goes

yes they are al the same CSA
i no once i have worked out what the spur is suplying i should be fine. but theres the old immersion heater tank in the same room so i was wondering wether that spur went to that even though there is a sperate MCB for the water heater but i noticed that when i turned the ring main off the timer for the water and central heating also turned off so theres a possibility it could be for that but i cant follow the cables unless i take floor boards up.
and yes it is black, red, earth for all sockets and lights.
but the cabling for the new sockets will go though trunking fixed onto the wall for ease of installation.

i no how to wire ring mains etc.
Except ones with spurs?

Why shouldn't there be? What's so shocking about it being there?
