can i use a standard rj45 to just pull up though a hole in my ceiling/floorboards to run one cable to the bedroom directly above?
or does it HAVE to be the installation cable???

thanks

A ready made and terminated rj45 lead will be fine for your needs. There is no real difference between hard wired and leads apart from the hard wired normally go to boxes and have an outlet you plug leads into.

so would i be able to cut off the rj45 ends and put a socket on each end for the sake of neatness?

you should be able to as long as the conductors are solid then you will be able to, just need to buy a punch down tool to do it , but not that hard to do

Nick

Normally the cable going to the back of sockets is solid core, if you use stranded cable you might struggle to connect to the back of a normal socket (not that i've ever tried - it may work) as the solid cores normally terminate into a slit in a bit of metal. You might be able to get sockets with screw terminals on the back though.

EDIT: too slow again

okie dokie :D
thanks for the help i have all the stuf apart from the cable btu i can easily get that. and i have only the basic IDC punch down tool do you reckomen me getting the proper oen witch cuts off the excess cable??

and also will the cabel need to be enclosed in trunkign or can it just be cliped to the wall with wire clips?
thanks again

:D good news i think
lol

i have just cut a RJ45 end off one of my leads(not the one i am planing to use) and punched it into a faceplate i have and then put it though the tester and its comes out positive:) (1-1 2-2 3-3 and so on)

and i see what you ment mikey the strandard cable is alot more flexible so it doesn't punch so easily but it does do it.

can any one give me the names of some suppliers of solid core rj45?? (just to be on the safe side)

thanks every one:P

Just for the records, the Krone IDC's were designed for solid or stranded cables.

I don't know if the same applies to other makes.

The IDC is designed for solid core 0.4mm -0.6mm cable.

For a domestic low speed, non critical use stranded will punch down ok' ish, just remember that the stranded by virtue of NOT being solid will not have the same tension on the IDC jaw. Basically the stranded will reshape, which means there's far more chance of failure due to weak, poor connections on the IDC.
