Had a sliding door robe assembled today. It's not fixed to the wall.

Wondered the best way, considering the gap 'tween robe and wall.

Would corner brackets inside the robe be best?

Can you access the gap at the back?
If yes I would cut 2 small blocks, say about 3" long by 2" wide and thick enough to bridge the gap.
Have someone hold the block in position while you drill a hole through the back of the wardrobe and block and drill deep enough to mark the wall.
Remove the block and drill the wall to accept a rawplug. Push rawplug into the wall and then get your assistant to hold the block back in position whilst you screw through the back of the wardrobe to secure it.
It's a good idea to mark the block on one face before you drill which way is up so you position it correctly when fitting it.

Does it really need to be fixed to the wall? normally if they're supposed to they come with a (usually bit rubbish) bracket.

When you close the (sliding) doors, there's a bit of sideways movement in the carcase.

Can't really move the robe. It's 7 feet tall and 6 wide.

The back panel is a bit of that lovely hardboardy stuff, hence the idea of a sturdy triangular metal bracket that screws to the cabinet in the top corners, then affixes to the wall.

The gap will still be there though I can reach either side so maybe put in pieces of skirt the same thickness.

Just get Keitai round - he'll soon sort it with a few 6" cut nails and a club hammer.
