Verge clips are useful if your gable is exposed. Could be very useful in this stormy weather!
They won't necessarily prevent mortar from falling out though.

I'd recommend changing your old mortar gable and replace with dry verge. Mortar always falls out eventually, I'm called out often to repoint gables. Dry verge all the way
