Am I right in thinking that although you can specify overhangs on trusses (the basic type not attic trusses), you could also just fashion your own by adding bits of 4x2 or whatever, and not worry about it at the ordering stage?

Does the overhang affect the length of the rafter part? If so, if you just add 4 by 2 then your ridge would be lower than otherwise. Or are you meaning some kind of trussed joists?
Also you'd have to check if the manufacturer would support the load, I'm assuming you want to hang something on the 4 by 2s.

The overhang I'm talking about will just follow the same pitch as the rafters and extend maybe 1 foot beyond the truss edge. so I thought maybe easier to add it in situ after the trusses are fixed. It's just for the soffit overhang.

They just arrive overlong to start with don't they and then you trim them all in a straight line to suit once insitu. Why would you want to add a bit to each one, just a waste of time/effort/money.

Yeah, it doesn't make sense thinking about it. Thanks for the replies, got my wires crossed, need to get my head around trusses.

A good truss rafter surveyor will discuss all these things with you, when he measures up. Things like soffit, pitch, valley sets (or loose fill, which I prefer), metal-work ancillaries, treatments, spacings etc will all be on the agenda.
