Just wondering if anyone has some ideas on lifting a rsj in to place in surrey i really dont want to have to get a crane

If I can get it in the back garden I have a fairly flat surface would i hire a beam lifter

The beam is 5.5m @30kg pm

We use scaffold tubes (several short lengths) as rollers. You can use short lengths of plastic drain pipe on softer ground though they can be a bit bouncy.
You need a Genie at each end. Note the roller platform so that the Genie has an uninterrupted road of travel....

So I reckon I can get it around back after looking about rolling it on small poles.

Where i think its going to be a problem is getting it in place.

The single story extension still needs scaffold as my garden runs down so at the moment the floor level at the furthest point is like 1.2m high

So I am mot sure I can get those lifts genie close enough

We have actually had to hire two machines (micro and 3 tonner) when dealing with the beams. Our steel company does not have Hiabs (don't ask). We use the three tonner to get it off the lorry then use the micro to mess around with the beam around the property.

I put mine in by myself. The smallest ones just on the rungs of a ladder. The big ones I built a small tower of scaffold and hoisted them up with my block and tackle. The big grey one was over 300kg.

The hardest one was this one, I literally rolled it through that little hole in the wall and along the top of the internal wall.

The old adage is "plan the lift, lift the plan"

Without knowledge of the site it's impossible to say if you could even use crane (at least a normal sort of size).

Genie lifts are the normal method (different capacities available) but need a solid level base or cdbe's chain block with a suitable point to support. Do you need to move the beam sideways into a slot or is it straight up and then columns slid under?

You are certain to need some preparatory works: levelling surfaces, scaffold etc and help, so make sure this is all in place and all parties know exactly what they're doing before you start. Get the beam as close as possible to its final resting place before you create an obstacle course of acrows
