No, I asked how many (asylum seekers) had they sent back, not how many students, dependants, legal migrants have voluntarily gone home.

Also we should never have started putting them up in hotels (4-star or otherwise!). I believe Starmer won a court case forcing the UK down that route, pesky lawyers again. AFAIK no other countries do this, in France they're in tents.
My guess is none of the main parties actually want to drastically cut immigration. They think it's a good thing for the country, but that the people wouldn't understand. Maybe coupled with lefty ideas about colonial guilt, another silly concept.
Whatever anybody thinks about Trump's antics on most fronts, he has reduced illegal immigration to the US by 90%, in principle a more difficult problem than ours, with their long land border with Mexico. We need a government with policies beneficial to the UK.

If it is the court case I am thinking of, then I know a little bit about it because a colleague was involved. That is not what happened. But it is very complicated. Also, it is not true about tents in France.

Only the ones who choose not to claim asylum in France. The same would happen here if they didn't claim asylum when they got here.

I tried looking into it quite recently. It seems, like here, they have a legal duty to accommodate them. They mainly use reception centres. But according to the Google, if they are full, then they use other accommodation including hotels. It is, however, surprisingly hard to get really good information. I thought this would be a perfect story for a respected journalist to research.

The latest numbers in France seem to be 50,000 in reception centres and 50,000 in hotels.
Reception centres are decent, purpose built accommodation. Not detention camps like they use in Greece.
