I've got a bit of rust on the rear quarter glass frame. It is about 2x10cm. Whats the best way to getting rid of it. I was going to put on some Kurust and then spray some black paint from Halfords.??

Its purely surface rust so what you propose should work well.
If you use Hammerite rust remover first before priming, the result should be even better.
John :)

Great. Would you mind detailing the steps I need to take as I've never done anything like this before. Also, "use Hammerite rust remover first before priming", is that the same as the Kurust stuff?

All you need to do is to rub the rust away down to bright metal with some fine emery cloth or wet and dry paper. When the visible rust has gone, the surface is treated with a milky pink liquid - Hammerite rust remover I think its called. (Expensive - £6 for a little bottle).
Anyway, with this stuff painted on, the metal surface turns a bluey black in about an hour. this is now a rust inhibited surface.
Once its dry, you mask off and spray with a primer after cleaning things with a solvent. Anti rust primers are thick and they take longer to dry than normal. This is rubbed down with wet and dry paper too.
Then, its applying a couple of coats of gloss black, the job is done.....but the problems with painting at this time of year is the amount of moisture in the air, which gives us all a problem, so if you have a nice warm garage you've cracked it!
John :)

Cheers!

By the way I was having a look on the Hammerite site and they've got something called Direct to Rust metal paint. Its a 3 in 1 formula which they claim means you don't need a primer. Is it any good, or am I likely to get a better, longer lasting finish with the traditional method?

hammerite make kurust. you have to make sure you get the metal absolutely flat with no rusty pits at all or it will be back soon enough. sand the kurust flat after it has dried or you will get bubble shapes when the paint is applied.

i would use a normal primer with a good quality black gloss or satin if that's what the rest of it is painted in which it looks like it is from your pic. sand in between each coat for the best results.

Cheers!

The rust will always come back through the paint. I painted some car parts years ago with hammerite after wire brushing most of the worst rust away, within a matter of weeks the rust was starting to bleed through.
Follow the previous advice and you wont go far wrong

Yeh, it all sounded a bit too good to be true! Primer it is then. Thanks for all the feedback.

Yes, its a bit of an art form. But you should get a few years rust free if you follow the steps above. You may find it easier to paint the complete window rail, instead of trying to "blow in" the repaired area. Remember when painting you are trying to seal the rust area, to keep the air out.

Very small area, so you cant loose.
