Hey our laundry ceiling has sagged due to our concrete heater tank not been position over a wall. Since then a leak has happen and stuffed the ceiling linings. Heater tank now has been by past. Tank is now empty.

I now need to slightly lower the ceiling and re line it. Room is 2.6 x 3m long. Roughly looks if the ceiling has dropped about 20-30mm in the area where the tank was.

Question. what's the best way to work out new level of the ceiling? Without having a laser.

Any help or device would be great.

Measure down from the corners or up from the floor.

Or use a spirit level

You're in Australia?
What's the ceiling made from? Can you access above?

From New Zealand. Yes man hole is in same room. Pinex ceiling rimu framing above

If the floor is not level tho and the ceiling is sagged. Where do you get the true measurement from?

A long spirit level against a wall @ a convenient height will give you a level line to start from - turn the level end to end to check that it's true. You can go round the room using the same procedure or pull a string line from your marked wall to one opposite and check the line with the level ( 2 people needed) Then measure up from you datum line to the ceiling and use the line to find the extent of the bump in the middle. OR you could use a simple water (tube) level if you can get one

A home-made water level will give a true level all round the room. Even a long spirit level may wander a bit as you go round the walls.

You can do it with a length of transparent plastic tube (9mm bore or so) and fix one end to the wall with a cable clip or something, wander round the room with the other end, the water level will always be exactly the same at both ends, however much it hangs down or bends, and you can pencil-mark the wall.

You may need to top it up if there are spillages. A small funnel or a washing-up liquid bottle will do.

Hardware stores and fishpond places sell it. I don't know the price where you are, but roundabout £1 - £1.50 per metre here. Bigger sizes are easier to read but a bit dearer.

edit
works like this.
I don't know how he managed to take so long explaining it
When you see one, you'll understand within ten seconds
In your case, you don't need a ruler, just work straight off the hose ends.
