The floor in certain places in our lounge is starting to sag and we are worried someone may fall, we have heard that it is possible to place plywood sheets on top of the chipboard and screw down under the carpet, this would save a great deal of work as we are pensioners and if so could you tell me what would be the right type to get

WBP ply is what you need & this would normally be 18mm thick minimum for floors. When over boarding 15mm or even 12mm would be sufficient but that would be over a sound & flat floor. If the chip floor is bowing significantly, it’s usually a sign of damp has affected the board or even rot in the supporting joists. I would advise you establish exactly what’s caused it; just over boarding an unsound floor may end up a rather expensive short term fix if the problem is more significant.
