Santon Premier cylinder sudden decrease in water temp

Well, it looks like 26 years of experience has paid off and we now have a tank of piping hot water as normal! The engineer even gave me his moby number to contact him directly if that wasn't the case!

With regards to an immersion heater facility, we don't have one at all. There is a blanked box with a wire coming out of it but no switch on it. We have a "boost" button on our main timer unit for the CH and hot water so I guess that's an equivelant!

Thank you again for all of your help and advice. You provide a great service to those of us who know nothing of heating matters. It was great to be a bit more informed when describing the problem to the engineers!

Have a lovely weekend
Best wishes, Glenda x

I'm afraid not, Glenda. That boost button only works if your boiler, pump and heating controls are all working. The immersion heater option would give you a simple back-up that would work with the kind of problem that you've just experienced. You may well already have an immersion heater fitted to the cylinder but not wired up to the blanked off point that you have identified. If so it's a simple job to wire up.

Thank you for your kind interest!! Is it a photo of the hot water cylinder or myself that's required? Hot water cylinder I will gladly post but as far as a picture of myself is concerned...................You'll have to use your imagination!!!

With regards to an imersion heater, I think it would be a good idea to have it wired in for emergency use!!

ChrisR has added details of how to post a picture in the FAQ section.

Why are people too frightened to post pictures of themselves!

Even Chris has asked me NOT to post any pictures of him!

Unfortunately Glow Worm have revamped their web site and dropped their picture of me working on their 30ci.

:( After 1 week of hot water, it's all gone pete tong!! After only two quick showers this morning, the water was running luke warm from the taps and the tap at the bottom of the hot water cylinder was stone cold.

This can't be right, particularly as the hot water had only just finished its pre programmed midnight until 7am heating cylcle.

So, I've called BG AGAIN and the engineer who "sorted" it out last Thursday is due to arrive sometime this afternoon.

What else can be causing this drop off in water temperature. The motorised valve was replaced, I presume in its entirity! Please could anyone advise me of any further "suggestions" I could put to the engineer, on top of the many suggestions which have been posted and I've already mentioned on his previous visit.

I really am at my wits end with it all. Sorry to moan, there are people far worse off than I!!

Hi Glenda,

I also have a Santon TP150B and am experiencing exactly the same problems as you - variable amounts of hot water, luke warm, shower running cold etc - and its very frustrating.

I've had a few call-outs so far, the last one leaving just an hour or so ago and we have checked all the usual things that should be checked as your previous mailers have suggested. Tonight was to fit a new tank thermostat as the engineer thought that was the problem. However it seems that the old one is ok but the tank wall is sits against to monitor the temperature is not getting hot so it will never cut off - the pipes are hot into the tank and when put onto this the thermostat switches off thus working. So if the tank wall is not hot then the other way to sense temperature is with a probe/sensor else where in the tank that is then wired into the theromstat - but there is nothing. So he is confused as too the next thing now to do - he is going to call Santon tomorrow to see if they can help! Not sure if there is anything inside the tank thats not working properly but I assume that its a tank with a coil so what else is there that can be in there to go wrong?

I will let you know if I get anything sorted, if you can do the same

Regards,

Paul

Hi Glenda,
Dear pfriend 1
Touch wood BG finally sorted out my problem and I have had piping hot water, as normal for a few good weeks. It did take 4 different engineers though to fix it. I think in the end it was a motorised valve that was causing all of the problems and the thermostat was also replaced for good measure.
Hope you get your hot water back soon, particularly in this weather. xx

Oh heck! I presumed that all British gas engineers are fully trained and compentent, particularly as I pay a hefty monthly premium for their services when needed!

Never assume anything !!!

As for the hefty premium I think about £18 per month is pretty cheap when they make at least four visits to deal with just one fault!

I have to fix everything with just one visit otherwise our fixed charge of £84 starts to look a bit thin!

I would be so glad on any advice regarding my following problem!
We have a Santon premier water cylinder (model TP150B) which was installed 7 years ago.
Up until last Wednesday we have enjoyed a daily tank of piping hot water ! However, literally from one day to the next, the tank is now only producing tepid water even though the central heating is working perfectly.
I will be on my 3rd British gas engineer visit tomorrow! He changed the motorized valve yesterday to no effect. (Still tepid water and miserable children in almost cold baths!!) Even using the boost button, only produces a kitchen sink full of useable hot water.
Can anyone out there throw some light on the possible variuos causes of the above.
Many many thanks in anticipation
Glenda B xx

If your radiators are working properly and the motorised valve have been replaced and is opening and closing properly, it must be your cylinder stat. I would suggest using your immersion for now as a back up and when the BG engineer visits again ask him to disconnect the 3 core cable from the cylinder stat and see if you get 55-60 degress hot water on your auxillery flow pipe. If so, replace the cable and order a new stat.
