I'm trying to fix my television to a video I've inherited, I have two scart
cables and checking them with a continuity tester I find that their is no
connection between terminal no's 1 2 3 6 17 18 19 & 20 on one of them,
and no connection between terminal no's 1 2 3 6 19 & 20 on the other,
this can't be right can it? I'd appreciate it if someone could put me right.
Thanks

The 'in' connections at one end of the cable will probably be connected to the 'out' at the other, and vice versa, so pin 1 connects to pin 2, 3 to 6 etc. etc.

Tickely T is right is correct. you have 4 audios and 2 (comp videos) which have In to Out connections i.e. Crossed:

Pin 1 (Audio out Right) goes to Pin 2 (Audio in Right)
Pin 3 (Audio out Left) goes to Pin 6 (Audio in Left)

for Composite video you have

Pin 19 (Video Out) goes to Pin 20 (Video In)

And obviously the same on the other connector. To simplify the following are crossed:

1------2
2------1
3------6
6------3
19-----20
20-----19

These are the only pins which are crossed over the others are straight through.

Thanks for that everyone, it seems illogical to me to cross connections

like that but I'm sure their is a good technical reason for it, I,ll carry on

connecting. Thanks.

There sure is. My television has a scart socket that can be a video and sound input AND an audio only output. In one socket therefore you have audio inputs and outputs. If all the wires were connected like for like, no sound would be transmitted along the cable.
