We have just taken up a parquet floor in our lounge as we prefer carpet and a friend wants the blocks. The difference in level between the lounge and the rest of the floor is about 1/2". The parquet blocks were set in tar and so this covers the existing concrete.

I want to make the floor up to the same level as everything else on the ground floor and I presume that a screed floor will be the best/cheapest option for this thickness.

My questions:

1) Is sand/cement screed the best option?

2) What mix do I need?

3) Someone suggested to me that I should lay the mix dry. is this right?

4) How long before I can walk on it?

5) Any tips for ensuring that it is level

6) Approximately how much sand do I need for a 22 square meter area.

7) Do I need to seal the tar covered concrete? If so with what?

Answers on a post card please!

I wouldn't recommend sand/cement for 1/2" thickness - will break away.

You need floor leveling compound such as Latex which will find it own level with a float.

See this. Can go up to 30mm thickness and after 2hrs to walk on.
