Is it wise to jam an SDS bit into a standard drill? I would have said as long as the chuck can grip it, yes because the SDS bit can handle far more hammer than a standard hammer drill can give it.
As long as you can get the chuck to grip it properly, and you don't want to use the bit in an SDS machine again. The chuck will damage the end of the drill bit where its jaws bite in to the bit to grip it.
Also you will not get anywhere the same performance as you would from an SDS machine.
I need to drill a hole through the wall to the outside so need a long bit but the sds ones seem a lot cheaper in most cases and there's more choice in sizes.

give it a go, if you tighten the drill bit up properly and get it into a position so it does not throw you will be ok.
The process may be quite slow if your drill isnt up to much.
you can get a cheapo sds drill from bnq for about 20-25 quid n theyre alright, if youre putting an sds bit in an electric drill i wouldnt recommend it because they carry on when you let off the trigger, and if the bit slips youll break your wrist
