Any of you guys or gals able to give me some advice?

Can you tell me how the waste outlet on a WC pan used to be sealed to an old lead waste pipe? From what I can gather it's obviously some form of putty?

I'm due to replace a pan in the next day or so and would like to know what the best way to reseal the waste to the pan is, unfortunately replacing the section of pipework is not a viable option.

If you don't fancy shoving one of them into the small part of the pipe, you could try ye olde mixture - putty and paint. Makes your hands messy but sticks to anything and doesn't set hard.
